Music

Music intent at Mevagissy Primary School.

The way we teach music at Mevagissey Primary school, enables children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. Learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills.

Implementation of Music at Mevagissey Primary School

At Mevagissey Primary School we understand that musical teaching and learning is not neat or linear. The strands of musical learning are part of the learning spiral. Over time, our children both develop new musical skills and concepts, and re-visit established musical skills and concepts. Repeating musical skills means their progress and understanding is constantly deepening. Mastery means both a deeper understanding of musical skills and concepts and learning something new.

At Mevagissey Primary School, we teach one unit of music each term which is broken down into weekly 1 hour session.

Each Unit of Work comprises the of strands of musical learning which correspond with the national curriculum for music:

  1. Listening and Appraising
  2. Musical Activities
    1. Warm-up Games
    2. Optional Flexible Games
    3. Singing
    4. Playing instruments
    5. Improvisation
    6. Composition
  3. Performing
Knowledge and skills progression

Our detailed knowledge and skills progression ensures teachers deliver knowledge rich teaching and children gain the skills needed to progress in music. These are used to support the unit planning each term.
Knowledge organisers

We use our knowledge organisers to teach key learning and vocabulary. We have these in our floor books and add to them when we have learnt something new. The children have access to them each music lesson and love to quiz each other.
Our Choir

Our choir is something we are very proud of and so is our village. We perform at different events throughout the year including singing at the community music event, performing for the elders in the community at the local church, singing with the Mevagissey Male voice choir in their annual concert and any other event we get invited to! We love going out into the community to sing.
